All that walking around, watching and doing at The Scottish Game Fair makes a person hungry.
Which is why getting the food and drink right is one of our top priorities
As well as which, you’re there to socialise with your pals, have a drink, catch up over a meal. So you want to get that warm, cosy feeling inside.
So we looked around and decided to put the catering responsibility for the Fair in excellent hands – and after a lot of research, chose Swallow Events, who know all about food at big events. They’re the ones who will be choosing which food vans are good enough to be at the Fair. Which drink suppliers cut the mustard.
We asked Oli Thomas of Swallow Events a few questions
Q: Tell us a bit about how you started
A: We began in 2007 and used a classic American Airstream to sell cupcakes and coffee at festivals and events. Our first gig was Glastonbury Festival in 2008. As the business grew we got more and more Airstreams and then expanded into looking for good traders to register with us, so we could offer greater diversity of food.
Q: What do people like to eat in hot weather?
A: Ice cream!
Q: And what do people eat in cold weather?
Classic hog roasts, fish and chips and now we’re seeing Japanese food and Dutch chips, with a big assortment of dips.
A: What’s a new trend?
Q: People like to be able to eat with their hands at an outdoor event. Dishes growing in popularity are foods like Greek Souvlaki, Meze and Yorkshire Pudding wraps.
A: What’s the hardest thing about your job?
Q: Making sure that our food and drink suppliers are up to scratch, professional and offer quality. Customers need to come away happy, feeling that they have eaten something delicious and are getting value for money. The traders need to be happy too, with good facilities around them.
How food and drink looks is also important – we eat with our eyes as well as our mouths.
A: Finally, is vegan still a thing?
Q: Yes, absolutely!
