The Whitehill and Paddock Estates Challenge competition provides a great opportunity for estates to demonstrate the skills involved in field sports.
The Challenge was conceived to promote and celebrate the many estates and keepers who work so hard to conserve our beautiful countryside and preserve our high-quality country sports. We very much hope that the Challenge will be an enjoyable, sporting competition. It will include the following disciplines: shooting, fishing and gundog handling.
Each team has six people; two members to shoot clay pigeons, two members to take part in salmon and trout casting and a further two members to compete in a gundog challenge. In the spirit of the event, we would hope your team would include staff, genuine pickers up and one member would ideally be the owner, a member of the family or factor. We suggest that no professional clay shots or gundog handlers are selected! There will be no restrictions on what sort of dog competes; be it spaniel, labrador or terrier.
What to expect at each discipline
Shooting – two-man team flush – not driven, more of a fluster! Shooters must be certificate holders and bring their own gun. Loaders and cartridges (sponsored by Hull Cartridge) supplied.
Fishing – A distance challenge with a double handed salmon rod, rods all supplied, casting from a pontoon.
Gundogs – Simple picking up duties. It is more about ability to find than it is steadiness but needs dogs that have a reasonable level of control (heel, sit stay, don’t go off self-employed, and deliver to hand).
Timing
The event will take place at 11am on Sunday, 7 July 2024 at the Scottish Game Fair in the grounds of Scone Palace. All competitors will be given a complimentary ticket to the Fair on the day of the competition. There will be a reception following the competition when the prize giving will take place and the Trophy will be presented to the winning team. Hull Cartridges are also supporting the Challenge by providing free ammunition.
The competition will be coordinated by Strathmore Event Services, on behalf of The Scottish Game Fair, who will be in touch with those estates who agree to enter a team, providing further details of each discipline and timings of the event and answering any queries you might have.
Where possible we would like those competing to wear Estate Tweeds and we hope to have both upland and lowland estates participating. The event should be a fantastic publicity opportunity for estates to showcase their skills and activities in field sports, both large and small.
If you wish to enter a team, please e mail [email protected].
Pre-Registration required. This year the event is generously sponsored by Whitehill & Paddock.
