2024-07-01T15:15:41+00:00

Farm buildings aren’t what they used to be. Today they’re more likely to be housing holiday makers than horses, cows and pigs. You might have looked at a piece of your land or an outbuilding lying empty and wondered how you could turn it into money. How do you get started down the route of diversification, holiday cottages and lets? I talked to Katie Williams at Sykes Cottages who specialise in this area. What’s the situation now and how has it changed in the last few years? Changing times Katie said: “The way in which we take holidays is changing. Whereas ...

Introducing Whitehill & Paddock, sponsors of The Estates Challenge

2024-07-01T10:24:40+00:00

We spent five minutes talking to Jamie Hodgson, founder of Whitehill & Paddock who are sponsoring the Estates Challenge at The Scottish Game Fair this year. Here's how the conversation went. How did you get the idea for Whitehill & Paddock? Whitehill & Paddock is a nod to my grandpa's love for field sports—he was a real old-school shooter. His stories and passion for the Scottish countryside stuck with me, inspiring the brand you see today. It wasn’t just about shooting jackets and trousers. It was about capturing that essence of tradition and blending it with a bit of modernity. We ...

Are you a Wegan? Should you be?

2024-05-02T13:56:50+00:00

What is Weganism? Weganism is veganism with a game twist. Wegans only eat wild meat and fish that they have shot or caught themselves. There are several famous wegans around. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, set a personal challenge for himself in 2011 to only eat meat from animals he had killed. These included goats, pigs, chickens and lobsters. https://twitter.com/MuskokaWitch/status/1612469014722408453 New York Times best selling author Tim Ferriss is often credited as having brought the term Weganism into mainstream parlance when he included it in his Five Bullet Friday newsletter. He defines it  as: "Wegan /ˈwēɡən/ noun. Someone who follows ...

The facts and figures on rural crime in Scotland

2024-03-08T16:43:59+00:00

Here's a bit of good news if you live in a rural area in Scotland. A report published by our sponsors, rural insurers NFU Mutual, has revealed that the cost of rural crime has fallen by 48%. The figures are taken from NFU's 2023 Rural Crime Report. Rural crime cost Scotland £1.4m in 2022, a fall of 48% from 2021.* The countryside is fighting back. The welcome decrease comes after Scotland was hard hit by thieves targeting quad bikes in 2021, with the cost of rural crime in the country rocketing to £2.6m that year compared to £1.7m in 2020. Soaring ...

Bee bombs to help bumblebees thrive

2024-04-02T09:22:12+00:00

Do you know what a bee bomb is? Well, bee bombs help to create wildflower habitats where bees and butterflies make their lives. By just scattering bee bombs onto open ground you will be providing new spaces for bees to live. Sadly 97% wildflower habitats in the UK have been lost since 1945 and it is crucial we create spaces for bees who are key to a healthy ecosystem. Bella Gemmell, a student at Fairview International School (a sponsor of the Scottish Game Fair), has been making and selling wildflower seed bombs.  All profits are being donated to The Bumblebee Conservation ...

Last year Ross Macleod, Head of Policy in Scotland at the GWCT and Paris Jordan, Senior Multi-Asset Analyst at Waverton, met to talk about responsible stewardship and sustainability. Ross explained GWCT operations, conservation and the promotion of biodiversity and Waverton discussed how to value, measure and manage natural capital. Here's how the conversation went. Thinking about building a conservatory or extension? Read this first.

2024-02-19T13:35:55+00:00

How can you make sure a conservatory will be a welcome extension to your home, a welcoming area that can be used year-round? Rather than a dumping place for half-dead plants and boxes, which is too hot in summer and too cold in winter? Planned carefully, a conservatory can be a comfortable living space throughout the year. But how do you achieve that? We talked to Mozolowski & Murray who will be exhibiting at The Scottish GameFair this summer and asked them a few questions about the right (and wrong way) to choose a conservatory. Do you need planning permission for ...

Highland dancing: It certainly isn’t what it used to be!

2024-01-31T11:00:27+00:00

The swirl of a kilt, the music of bagpipes and dancers deftly moving their feet in time. Highland dancing is as Scottish as porridge, haggis, Robbie Burns and one of the hallmarks of this wonderful country's culture. The young Highland dancers who will be entertaining audiences at The Scottish Game Fair have learnt their technique at The Gordon School of Dancing in Montrose. I caught up with Robina Addison, the principal, and asked her a few questions. Q: Can you tell us a little about the history of Highland dancing and how it began? R: Traditionally kings and Scottish clan chiefs ...
