Fisherman’s Row leads from the Game Fair show arena down to the bank of the Tay and the centre of fishing activity where we welcome thousands of anglers each year. There’s lots to see and browse through this year with new features including ‘the Bothy’, a ‘Fly Fishing Mall’ as well as the usual trade outlets and activities.
The new ‘Bothy’ is located overlooking the river beside the Ghillies Bar, where you can take food and refreshments and then go next door to the Bothy and listen to debates on current fishing issues, talks by experienced anglers or hear about fishing breaks at home or abroad. The excellent trade outlets and riverbank arrangements are set up to let you try out and get a feel for a rod and line before you buy it; ideal if you want to spend a bit more on quality kit and be sure it’s what you want.
Also, new this year is the Fly Fishers Mall, a dedicated space for specialist manufacturers and traders who have kit and chat to interest you. There will also be a conservation and information centre where you can debate or query current issues that are impacting on fish and fishermen.
There will be the usual fly casting tuition, competitions and demonstrations but all with some exciting additions to showcase the sport and its environment in 2017.
FLY FISHING MALL
This is an exciting new feature for the 2017 Fair where a hall dedicated to fly fishing outlets will be grouped together under the one roof. The Mall has been organised in partnership with the Fly Fishing and Fly Tying magazine and we are delighted to have them on board to bring a new aspect to Fisherman’s row this year. Traders including Bloke Fly rods, Coch-y-Bonddu Books, Replica Fish Sculptures, Chevron Hackles, Hilditch Wood design, Simba Rods, Kirkwood and Funky Flytying will be there in addition to the stands dedicated to Somers of Aberdeen and Daiwa.
This another new feature for 2017 is designed as a go to place for anglers to meet up with friends listen to debate on current issues or watch presentations on fishing breaks here and abroad as well as displays and chats on all things fishing. The finalised program will be posted in due course. The ‘Bothy’ adjoins the Ghillies Bar where this year patrons can have food and refreshments overlooking the river and join in the sessions in the Bothy. Guest speakers including Fiona Armstrong, Hywel Morgan David Summers, Ally Hutchins, Massimo Magliocco, Sandy McIntosh and Douglas Aitken will be chatting through their experiences with Allister Wallace and answering questions from the floor. Come along to hear fascinating conversations and stories from angling lore.
FLY DRESSING DEMONSTRATIONS
The increasingly popular Fly Tying Tent sees the continuation of demonstrations and opportunities for all to test their skills or to receive instruction. Tuition and encouragement will be given by Fly Dressing experts. The tent this year will be co-located within the Fishing Control Tent on the riverbank where you can see freshly netted river bugs and flies under the microscope and then see how they are tied up into imitations. We are grateful to GAIA for their expertise and assistance in this venture and assisting with judging the novice fly dresser of the day. There are prizes on offer for the novice willing to have a go. There are also games and activities for young people with a young angler ‘Species Hunt’ along Fisherman’s row also for prizes.
2017 FLY CASTING DEMONSTRATIONS
Fly casting demonstrations on the river feature a wide range of single and double handed casting techniques at hourly intervals between 11.00 and 16.00 each day in accordance with the finalised program. A selection of well-known experts will demonstrate on the river and in the main arena and are happy to answer your questions.
