2017 Fishing

Fisherman’s Row leads from the Main Ring down to the bank of the Tay and the centre of fishing activity where we welcome thousands of anglers each year. There’s lots to see and browse through this year with new features including ‘the Anglers Bothy’, and a ‘Fly Fishing Hall’ as well as the usual Traders.

The new ‘Anglers Bothy’ is located overlooking the river beside the Ghillies Bar, where you can take food and refreshments and then go next door to the Bothy and listen to debates on current fishing issues, talks by experienced anglers or hear about fishing breaks at home or abroad. The excellent traders and riverbank arrangements are set up to let you try out and get a feel for a rod and line before you buy it; ideal if you want to spend a bit more on quality kit and be sure it’s what you want.

There will be the usual fly casting tuition, competitions and demonstrations but all with some exciting additions to showcase the sport and its environment in 2017. Also, new this year is the Fly Fishers Hall, a dedicated space for specialist manufacturers and traders who have kit and chat to interest you. There will also be a conservation and information centre where you can debate or query current issues that are impacting on fish and fishermen.

This is an exciting new feature for the 2017 Fair where a marquee dedicated to fly fishing outlets will be grouped together under the one roof. The Mall has been organised in partnership the Fly Fishing and Fly Tying magazine and we are delighted to have them on board bring a new aspect to Fisherman’s row this year.

This is another new feature for 2017 and is designed to be a go to place for anglers to meet up with friends listen to debates on current issues or watch presentations on fishing breaks here and abroad as well as displays and chats on all things fishing. The programme will be posted in due course. The ‘Bothy’ adjoins the Ghillies Bar where this year patrons can enjoy refreshments overlooking the river between sessions in the Bothy.

The increasingly popular Fly Tying Tent sees the continuation of demonstrations and opportunities for all to test their skills or to receive instruction. Tuition and encouragement will be given by Fly Dressing experts. The tent this year will be located beside the Fishing Control Tent on the riverbank and where you can see freshly netted river bugs and flies under the microscope and then see how they are tied up into imitations. We are grateful to GAIA for their expertise and assistance in this venture and assisting then judging the novice fly dresser of the day. There are excellent prizes on offer for the novice willing to have a go. There are also games and activities for young people with a young anglers hunt along Fisherman’s row for a prize.

Fly casting demonstrations on the river feature a wide range of single and double handed casting techniques at hourly intervals between 11.00 and 16.00 each day in accordance with the finalised programme. A selection of well-known experts will demonstrate on the river and in the main ring and are happy to answer your questions.
